What Freedom Do I Enjoy the Most free essay sample
What Freedom do I enjoy the most? The freedom I enjoy most is the Freedom of Speech. I enjoy this freedom the most because I, as an American, have the right to express my feelings or opinions on any subject, and not get into any major trouble for doing so. This freedom comes from the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. In other countries such as North Korea or Cuba that are communist countries, a citizen would not have the right to express their feelings about anything, political or not. If America was a communist country, I would not be able to have any opinions of my own, at least I would not be able to verbalize or express them in any way. For example, if I thought the government did something wrong, I would have to be quiet and live with it, never uttering a thing because if I did, I could be punished. In some countries, the punishment for expressing my opinion about anything against the government, includes possibly being put into prison, or even killed. Thankfully, in America, we as citizens have the right to state our opinions about any ââ¬Å"every dayâ⬠issues. We can talk freely to our friends and neighbors or speak freely in front of a group of people. Since I am able to speak freely, I can express my opinions on anything. This includes speaking about things such as government, laws, religion, or any other issues. This means that if I disagreed with a law I would be able to speak to many people about my disagreement and no one could tell me that I cannot share my opinion. Exceptions to this freedom include not hurting others or lying. If I knowingly say things that are false about another, I may be sued in a court-of-law. The Supreme Court requires the government provide substantial justification for the interference with the right of free speech where it attempts to regulate the content of the speech. The Supreme Court has also recognized that the government may prohibit some speech that may cause a breach of the peace or cause violence. This is a good thing because if I could make up anything false and say it, wars or huge arguments could end up occurring because of false information. If I did not have the freedom to speak, it would be terrible. Every day, we as Americans state many opinions about everyday things and we do not even realize how much the Freedom of Speech is really worth. We take for granted our right to tell our friends what we think about something. Imagine if we could not ever say aloud how we really felt about something. Thinking about that really makes me so thankful for the Freedom of Speech. Word Count: 469
